DEATH PENALTY...

In our world , especially in our time, crime rates are increasing day by day. Everyday we are hearing some kind of news which are related to crimes or criminals. People are becoming more intolerant and commit more crimes. Of course they should be punished for what they do, but I think punishing should be done to stop them from commiting a crime. In that point some people assert that death penalty is the best solution to that problem, especially for people that kill other people. On the other hand, the other people think that death penalty can never be a solution. So it shouldn’t be mandatory for people that kill other people. I think similarly because at first everybody has right to live, secondly we would be like them if we punished them with deth penalty, finally we should have other possibilities other than that.

We all have the opportunity for living. So taking somebody’s life can’t be acceptible in any case. *Death penalty violates living right and prisoners expose to cruel, inhuman actions. This is also against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.* Of course killing someone is a really big crime. Nobody has this right. Such a criminal should certainly be punished. In that case what we should do is trying to show them correct way but punishing them with death penalty can’t teach them anything. This can’t give them any chance to pick the correct way. In other words, this can’t be a solution. It can be a kind of escape from the reality because in real sense there is still “crime”. That is, only one visible problem disappears from the world but real problem stays forever! So I can again say that nobody has the right to take a person’s life even if he/she is a really dangerous criminal..

Let’s think about the death penalty issue more deeply. *Killers kill guiltless people. Of course there is no question on that issue but does this mean that we have the right to kill these killers? * We want to stop them from commiting this crime but we are commiting the same crime while we are trying to stop them. I can’t understand this. I can’t accept the notion that death penalty is a necessity in some situations. This is very nonsense, to me. While we are doing the same thing with these criminals, how can we hope that we will exterminate such kind of crimes. I don’t think this is a solution, rather it is a kind of bigger problem. So I think we shouldn’t be like them, we shouldn’t be such criminals via relying on death penalty.

In some cases, it can be seen the only possible action for that kind of big crimes but actually it isn’t. Of course we have other possibilities rather than death penalty to punish or in one sense to stop these people. I said formerly also, our goal shouldn’t be disposing of one criminal. Death penalty can only be used for this purpose. Our goal should include more elaborate and specific opinions about the issue of reducing the crime rates. Because we all want to live in a really safe environment and this only can be via reducing or maybe impossible but totally getting rid of crimes. So people who are responsible for punishing those criminals should think more logically on that issue. They can find other more acceptible ways to stop these criminals.

Finally I want to say the notion that we can punish people with death penalty is really unacceptible. Every person who can think logically can’t accept this barbaric opinion, killing person whomever he/she is..

Internet means many things to all of us because people all over the world use it for many reasons. Of course on a that kind of comman issue, people have lots of opinions, both negative and positive. Some people think that internet is a means of reaching information easily. So it is very useful. But that can’t be the whole issue according to me. Internet is being used for doing many other harmful things also. So it has many negative effects on people like making us unsocial, taking so much of our time and disturbing our private lives.

According to some people, internet is being used to socialize people. I strongly disagree with this point of view. Via some kind of web-sites or chat rooms, people are communicating eachother. Actually they are just assuming that they are communicating. Because I don’t think that it can make people more social. On the contrary, they have become like robots standing in front of PC for long hours. They forget to go cafes or such kind of places and share their thoughts with other people face to face. We aren’t animation characters in a computer game. We are real people. So we should behave acocording to this. I believe that internet can never make people social in real sense.

People are spending much time in front of PC everyday. Generally they spend their time via playing computer games or chatting with people ect. So using internet to reach an information (which is the most useful way to use internet according to some people)is actualized less than for those purposes that I mentioned above. In this point, I can say that people are spending their time in vain. The only thing that is positive related to this issue may be enjoying because people are enjoying when doing all these activities on internet. So they can't easily see real bad effects of using internet too much. People aren’t allocating time even their basic personal needs like eating or sleeping. For example they don’t sleep enough so that they can play with games much. Maybe they are enjoying when playing games but the time they spend is really excessive and never comes back.

I think this is the most negative effect of the internet, disturbing our private life… Internet can cause us feel unwell with many ways. Some people are very expert on that area and they can easily reach many people’s private information. This means that there is no security in internet. The minor example is following, when we send an e-mail to one of our friends, some other people can reach this mail even before it is sent to whom we want. I think this is a really bothering situation. It can create many misunderstandings and problems especially if we want to share some important information with somebody. So these kind of things can be really big proplems for us. For example some people can reach our bank account numbers if they want. Just think about it, how horrible situation it would be. So in internet people should be very careful because thet aren’t alone even if they are absulately sure that they are!!

Of course, I am not oppose to using internet. When it is used with some kind of rules, it can be very useful. What I want to explain to you that in our world, internet has many negative effects on people’s lives, unfortunatelly more than its positive effects. So we should be very careful when using it if we don’t want to be in a real trouble that can cost corruptive outcomes…

Wearing Uniforms at School

Both students and teachers have been discussing an issue for a long time "whether students should wear uniforms or not". Some people claim that students should wear uniforms at primary, secondary and high schools. On the other hand, some people think that it is very unnecessary and a kind of burden for students. If they want, they can show off with other things like their bags, shoes even with their pencils according to these people. To me, wearing a uniform is required for different reasons like economic situation of Turkey, equality among students and maybe the most important reason for psychology of students.

As you all know, the economic situation of Turkey is quite bad. People have many difficulties for making money. Many people are really poor and can only live with the help of some charity foundations. On the contrary, there are some very wealthy people in Turkey, that is, there is a huge economic unbalance among people. So in this kind of country, wearing uniforms at primary, secondary and high schools is a kind of necessity. In schools, there are students from different economic classes. Their life styles are very different. Some students live in huge houses with servants in them. Other poor students may not have even a small shed. It may be seen an exaggeration but even the things they eat are dissimilar. I am absulately sure that especially in schools, students shouldn’t feel these differences. So in this point, we can see that wearing uniforms is necessary for students.

When we think about equality among students, we can say that it is related to economy. That is, the biggest factors that create inequality are economic differences of those students. Of course there are many other factors that affect this problem. Shortly, wearing uniforms shows equality. Students don’t feel themselves superior or inferior to eachother. Whoever they are in their normal lives, poor, wealthy ect. they are students in school and they are totally equal.

Psychological mood is really important for all people. It affects people very much. Students have many psyhological problems especially when they go secondary or high school. In that age, they are in adolescence period. So they are more sensitive and they have really complex psyhological moods. One day they may be very happy, the other day they may cry all day. Especially in that age, wearing uniforms at school is being very crucial. If there were no uniforms, students might humiliate eachother easily because of their wearing styles. Different economic, social status of students become more visible in that case. With the effect of their age, students can’t think logically. They may want their parents to do something impossible for them. Maybe their parents can’t buy costly things for their children because of economic deficiencies. But when they see their children upset, they will be the most unhappy people in the world. So not only the students but also their parents are affected very badly from this situation.

Maybe some people don’t agree with me about this issue. Of course I know the difficulties of wearing uniforms as a student who had worn uniform for long years but I’m living in Turkey. I think the people who know the real meaning of living in Turkey can easily understand the importance of wearing uniforms at school…

Getting a Good University Degree in Turkey

Going to a university is a really important issue for many reasons. University is on the top of the education period. People go to a university and when they graduate from it, they begin to work and earn money. Of course, we can choose the other way and after 4-year-period, we can continue our education through master and Ph.D. Especially in Turkey, maybe just going to a university is not enough. People are required to go to a good university and also graduating from this univesity with a good degree. So they try to get a university degree for variable reasons like working in a good area, earning much money and getting a good status in society.

I think, job has a significant place in all people’s lives. We are spending many hours in our jobs maybe more than that we spend in our houses. When we try to find a job, we consider many things. Generally we want to find a suitable job for us, that is, the jobs that we like. Because if we don’t like our jobs, the time that we spend there can be like a hell for us. Secondly we take into consideration the money that we will earn via our job. Finding a well-paid job is crucial for people. If we add the difficulty of finding a good job in Turkey, we can easily understand the importance of getting a good university degree there. The more good university degree we get, the more opportunities we have in many areas.

It is extremely hard to earn money in Turkey, because the economic situation of Turkey is very bad. Many people are under poverty. Some people can’t find money even to feed their children. It is very painful and shameful case according to me because we are living in a country which has many economical resources actually. But the major question is that how many of these resources are being used? If they were really used maybe going to a good university and getting a good university degree would became unnecessary. Now I should say that if we don’t want to be among these people who have many difficulties in their lives because of earning insufficient money, we should be thoughtful about the issue of university degree.

And getting a good status in society… For many people even if they don't mention about this, status is important. Actually in all areas in the life there is some kind of hierarchy, from family to the working area. This is the same when we go to a university. According to some people going to a good university is a kind of getting a good status among people. Even if we don’t accept this, people around us think in that way. When somebody enters the university enterance exam and gets a high degree, people say pleasing things about him/her. When graduating from a university,this time graduating with a high degree becomes important. On the other hand, it is peculiar to every person of course. Perhaps it is a hidden desire but getting a good status in society has much importance in people’s lives and the first step for this is related to university.

I can say that if we are living in Turkey, we should get a good university degree at least to find a chance to live in better conditions. Unfortunately in some situations even this is also not enough ,that is, it isn’t certain if we can reach our target or not about the issue of living comfortably. There are many people in Turkey who are unemployed, even if they graduate from a really good university with a really good degree. About this issue, I can say that I don't think getting a good degree in university. I have other more logical plans:) Finally I think this will explain everything- we are living in Turkey…

Second Life.. Second World..

As you all know, computer games are really important in our technologic world. Some people are addicted to them. They are playing these games all night, they don’t even sleep. In these days, there is a computer game in my life also. Its name is Second Life. Actually to me, it is not just a computer game. It is a kind of second animation life for people who use it. They can do whatever they do in their real life in this online environment. So people are using SL for various reasons. For example we met it via our reading and writing class teacher. We are using it in our lessons. Of course, people have other reasons for using SL, like social activities and chatting with other people and also business.

We got acquainted with this animation life in our reading and writing class. Our teacher told us about it. Now we are using it for education. We are doing many activities via this game in our class. For example we can chat with other people from other countries. Or we can talk about something that our teacher tells us to speak in this online world. That is, we are doing some kind of writing exercises which are related to our lessons in SL. I think it is interesting to use a game for education. But we are pleased about this situation. Via this game, our lessons become more enjoyable. We are not the only students who use SL for educational purposes. Many other universities and schools around the world are using SL for their educational programs. Lots of universities have set up online campuses where students can meet and attend classes. Not only for students but also for teachers SL is really useful means of education.

In second category, people are using this game for social activities like chatting with other people. They can meet there new people and talk about whatever they want. Meeting new people can be more enjoyable in this online environment. Because people don’t see eachother and they are just trying to spend time amusingly. This relationship among people isn’t so serious according to me. So people are more relaxed in there. I know some people who are really addicted to this game. After they come home from work, they sign in SL and they are spending a lot of time in front of computer. I think this game is really useful for people who want to make life more enjoyable through meeting new people.

The third category is related to business. Some people are using this game for their business activities. Maybe it sounds a bit nonsense but we can understand if we think about it a while. For example, in SL people are communicating with eachother via chatting. If they want, their conversations can be hidden. If they allow, other people can also see what they are talking about. So all people can share their ideas evidently. This is just one example. People are doing many other activities in SL. The other example is related to students. SL provides interactive learning classrooms like real classrooms. That is, they can do there whatever they do in their real classrooms. Of course, some companies and people are working in SL to actualize these activities. So we can say that some people are really working in this online world.

I think SL is quite important for some people. They like spending time in this game very much. People are really enjoying in this animation life, even if their purposes of using it are different. It is really a second life for them to enjoy..

Technology in Class...

Teaching effectively…It is really important issue for both students and teachers and in this case the most signficant factor that affect teaching is of course teaching method. Imagine that in one school, there are two sections. In one section, teacher is using technology usually and students are in a computer lab in all their classes. In the other section, conversely, teacher never uses technology and students are studying via conventional method, with pen and paper. I think that in both of the stuations, students have advantages and disadvantages. There are some differences between two classes like class activities, deliverance of homeworks ect. Of course there should be some similarities also because teachers are doing the same job. Assessment of students, the topics which the students learn can be similarities of these classes. I think that deciding in which class students will take lessons is a kind of problem. Because everyone has different opinions about the usage of technology in class. Let’s discuss it.

Actually to me, there are major differences between two classes. Because the ways teachers use in classes are really different. So their teaching strategies are also very different. If technology is used in lessons, students will do everything via computer and internet. For example, they can learn their homeworks, do and deliver them via internet. They can also learn about lesson like which topic they will learn in next class again through internet. Maybe they have questions about lessons or homewoks. They can mail teacher and learn what they want to learn easily. In class activities also they can use computers and internet much. For example, teacher wants them to write something related to lesson. They write it via computer, not pen and paper. They may use some kind of web sites in their lessons to make them more enjoyable and instructive. So students are very active in lesson . If we come to the other class in which teacher is against the usage of technology, students will learn everything through conventional method. For example, teacher says homeworks in their lessons. Students do and write them on a paper and deliver to the teacher by hand. When they have questions, they go to teacher’s room and ask it to him/her. In class time, they do activities in general way. That is; teacher tells about that day’s topic and students listen. So I can say that this is so boring class for students.

On the other hand of course there are and there should be some similarities between these classes. Because curriculum is clear and what students have to learn is obvious. So the ways teachers use in class can be different but I think conclusion should be the same. Both of the teachers should reach their teaching goals. So in this point I can say that one of the similarities between these two classes is the assessment of students. Teachers are both doing some kind of assessment tests on students to see if they learned what they should learn. Briefly conclusion should be the same because goals are the same but actually I am not sure about this issue. Maybe teaching strategies affect the conclusion and learning levels in these classes can be different. But to me, at least assessment part is the same. In both classes, students are evaluated. I think the other similarity is related to behaviours. Of course teacher is teacher and student is student in both cases. So they should respect eachother and both student and teacher should do their duities. Shortly teacher-student relationship is generally similar in both classes.

To some people, first class is more enjoyable and suitable to our time. But to the other people, maybe who are not related to computer so much, first class is more difficult and boring. They may believe that using technology in class is unnecessary. But I don’t think so. Especially in our age, technology is so important in all areas, in school, in work ect. So according to me, using technology in class is necessary. Through using internet and computer, we are getting accustomed to this technologic world. Finally I can say that if I had the chance of deciding between two classes, I would choose technologic one...
